Thurs 12th Nov 2009 - 'A Globetrotter's Gallery' with Julia Treharne

Just back from the Himalayas, Quills member Julia Treharne joins us to share tales from her travels all over the world, illustrated with photographs documenting indigenous peoples, landscapes, flora and fauna.

 

The AGM will also be held this evening.  Please let us know if you are interested in joining the committee.

Fun quiz night to chase away the winter blues.  There will be a raffle and our fabulous desserts for sale.  Bring your own drinks and nibbles.

Thurs 10th Dec 2009 - 'Through the Green Room Door' with Maureen Miller

Local resident Maureen Miller joins us this evening to reminisce on her time spent in the theatre.  I'm sure there will be one or two seasonal anecdotes to get us in the Christmas spirit!

We will also present a cheque to Suffolk Family Carers for the funds raised by Quills this year.

Thurs 14th Jan 2010 - 'I read it in the Local Rag' with Pip Wright

Suffolk author Pip Wright has read hundreds of newspapers, most of them at least 150 years old. Hidden within their pages he has found an archive of remarkable stories, sad, funny, revealing, informative; but always entertaining. 

Tonight, Pip will take us into the past to catch a glimpse of life in times gone by.

Thurs 11th Feb 2010 - 'Warriors, Settlers & Nomads' with Christina Dillmann

Evolutionary psychology reveals the personality traits we have inherited, and that shape our lives.  There are three traits, which everyone has to varying degrees:  'resolute - organisational', 'intuitive - adaptive' and 'charismatic - evidential'.

Thurs 11th Mar 2010 - 'Cake Decorating' with Margaret Castle

Margaret Castle started cake decorating for her daughter's wedding.  Tonight she will demonstrate for us the art of crafting sugar flowers to adorn cakes for any occasion.

Margaret will be donating one of her cake decorations for the raffle, so don't forget to buy tickets!

Thurs 8th Apr 2010 - 'Folklore and Fairytales' with Robin Herne

Folklore and fairytales were fictional stories passed on by word of mouth.  Based on traditions of the time, sometimes involving a far-fetched sequence of events, they often contained a moral lesson.

This evening Robin Herne, noted storyteller, lecturer and tutor, will take us to a land far, far away...

Thurs 13th May 2010 - 'Satire in Song' with Joyce Kimber

'Twas on a Thursday evening, the Speaker came to call...

Joyce Kimber trained as an opera singer, and tonight she will entertain us with 'Satire in Song'.  Her talk includes comic song-writers from Gilbert and Sullivan to Flanders and Swann and is illustrated with original recordings.

Thurs 10th Jun 2010 - 'The Development of Surnames' with Derek Palgrave

Surnames derive from many sources such as father (Peter-son), locality (Hill), occupation (Cooper) or nickname (Small).

Our speaker this evening, Derek Palgrave, developed an interest in genealogy and heraldry at an early age and is now the vice-president of the Federation of Family History Societies.  This evening his fascinating talk will illustrate the origin and development of surnames through the ages.
